Counseling for Caregivers

 

Caring for an aging loved one is hard. In fact, it’s one of the most challenging things you’ll ever do. AND you’re doing it in addition to life’s regular challenges of career, child rearing, etc. It seems impossible to manage it all, but you find yourself with no other choice.

When counseling caregivers, I have two main goals:

First, is to make sure your “toolkit” is full. Are you accessing everything out there that may make your caregiving job easier? This includes everything from tips and tricks for working with older adults to local support services that are available. My goal is to provide each caregiver with at least one new tool that will help them breath a sigh of relief.

Second, is to help you process the anxiety and sadness that often accompanies the caregiver role. To do this I employ a variety of therapeutic techniques that best match your needs. My therapy style is largely rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which focuses on changing thought patterns to improve mental wellness.

Counseling for Older Adults

 

There’s no guide that tells us how to age well. Everyone’s experience is different and full of new challenges. Maybe it’s losing friends and family members, new health challenges, loss of identity or your longtime home. These are difficult and uncharted territories and you’re likely to need support.

I am experienced in counseling older adults dealing with anxiety, depression, and acute stress disorder. When counseling these clients, I employ a variety of therapeutic techniques to best meet his or her needs. My work with older adults is largely rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Reminiscent Therapy. My goal is to help the older adults I counsel process all the changes happening in their lives and maintain a sense of happiness and purpose.

Counseling at End-of-Life

 

A phase of life almost all of us will encounter, but many of us haven’t thought about or planned for. If you find yourself feeling unprepared to walk your loved one through this phase of life, you are not alone. 

Let me help you navigate this difficult time. I can provide you with local resources and make sure you and your loved one are accessing everything possible to make the end as peaceful as it can be. I will also provide therapy to you and your loved one as you manage all the new thoughts and feelings that accompany this difficult time.

Assistance with Advance Directives

 

If you or your loved-one has not completed an Advance Directive and wants to, there’s no time like the present. It’s not nearly as daunting a task as you may think. It just means setting aside some time to have a difficult but important conversation. I can help guide you, and make it easier.

This can likely be completed in one or two counseling sessions and may be just a piece of the services I can provide to you and your loved one.

Counseling for Dementia Caregivers

 

Dementia brings a whole new layer of challenges to the caregiving load. Do not go it alone. You cannot take care of your loved one if you aren’t taking care of yourself. And it is incredibly hard to find time to take care of yourself. Make your physical and mental health a priority, because your loved one would want you to.

Bereavement Counseling

 

Maybe you are trying to process the loss of a loved one you have spent years caring for, maybe you lost a parent suddenly and unexpectedly, or maybe they are still here but you are mourning the loss of the person they used to be. Each person’s situation will be different, but grief is always hard.

Let me help you process this grief. I will employ a variety of therapeutic techniques to best match your needs. My therapy style is largely rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which focuses on changing thought patterns to improve mental wellness. My grief and loss therapy is focused on processing the recent loss, practicing self-compassion, and highlighting your strengths and ability to move forward.
